The
Institute
for Youth Development is a non-profit, non-partisan organization
that promotes research, messages, and action to help the nation's
youth avoid or abandon unhealthy behaviors. Recognizing the links
between the major youth risk behaviors, the Institute promotes a
comprehensive approach to the avoidance of alcohol, drugs, sex,
tobacco, and violence.
The Institute's Journal, Adolescent
& Family Health, is a peer-reviewed quarterly
publication for objective, scientific research that focuses on factors
influencing youth risk behavior and risk avoidance. Adolescent
& Family Health reports on unpublished original research,
evaluation of youth risk-avoidance program outcomes, and on the
factors that lead to the adoption of risk behaviors as well as their
avoidance. These include, but are not limited to, the influence
of positive relationships with parents and family, schools, other
adult authority figures, extracurricular activities, faith-based
organizations, sports, and peer groups, as well as academic achievement
and the media. Through augmenting the scientific knowledge base
on the influences on youth health, the Institute seeks to empower
practitioners, families, and others engaged in building effective
programs that protect America's youth.
